Docker is being retired and won't be supported as of May 2023. For Windows Server 20 node pools, containerd is generally available and is the only runtime option on Kubernetes version 1.23 and higher. For Linux node pools, containerd is used on Kubernetes version 1.19 and higher. The runtime helps abstract away sys-calls or operating system (OS) specific functionality to run containers on Linux or Windows.
